Paul Baker has created a free online masterclass on on Polari, Britain’s secret gay language from the early 20th century, for pupils aged 14 to 18, as part of Just Like Us’ School Diversity Week celebrations.
School Diversity Week is happening 21-25 June and will see a range of free masterclasses taking place online, organised by Just Like Us, the LGBT+ young people’s charity.
Primary schools, secondary schools and colleges can sign up to take part in School Diversity Week, which is a celebration of LGBT+ equality and seeks to improve the lives of LGBT+ young people who right now are disproportionately struggling with mental health, tension at home and feeling less safe in school.
Paul Bakers’s free online masterclass is titled ‘What was Britain’s secret gay language and why don’t we use it anymore?’ and can be watched below.
Join Paul on Monday 21 June at 14:00-14:55 for the premiere of his School Diversity Week masterclass.
Paul Baker (he/him) is a Professor of English Language at Lancaster University and the author of 'Fabulosa! The Story of Polari, Britain’s Secret Gay Language'.
