openly LGBT+ students go back into the closet at work?
The Just Like Us LGBT+ Mentoring Programme pairs bright LGBT+ 18 - 25 year old ambassadors with LGBT+ senior professional role models in various fields, for one year.
These flexible partnerships reward Just Like Us ambassadors for their courageous schools work, by supporting them to:
  • explore careers
  • make great professional contacts, and
  • be confident LGBT+ people in the workplace
The programme is in partnership with Travers Smith.
The next programme starts in October 2020 in central London.
Ambassador Josh credits his civil service mentor Brais for giving him the insight and work shadowing opportunity to get a graduate job at the Ministry of Defence.
Want to join the 2020-21 programme?
The next Just Like Us LGBT+ Mentoring Programme runs October 2020 - September 2021.
On joining the programme as an ambassador mentee or senior LGBT+ professional mentor, you meet your mentoring partner at an afternoon event at Travers Smith in central London. Here, we'll guide you both through target-setting conversations and basic mentoring methods, and hear from a high profile LGBT+ keynote guest.
Mentoring meetings are arranged by you, and we suggest you organise 6 - 10 over the year. Ambassador mentees love being connected with more professionally experienced LGBT+ role models; whilst mentors really appreciate the opportunity to get to know brilliant young LGBT+ people and share their early career challenges.

FAQ for ambassadors
What if I can't make it to the launch?
Unfortunately this means you can't join. Previous years of the LGBT+ Mentoring Programme show that mentees who don't attend the launch day are much less likely to have successful mentoring relationships.
I've done this programme before - can I do it again?
Yes!
Do I need to be continuing as a Just Like Us ambassador in the year of my mentoring?
You need to be intending to continue contributing to Just Like Us, even if you can't go into schools any more.
Do I need to be in a particular stage of my career/studies?
No. Ambassadors have joined during their degrees, in their final years, whilst they've been job-hunting and whilst at the start of their careers. Mentoring is a valuable way to prepare for your career, no matter how far ahead it is.
I have a buddy from Ambassadors' Day - do I need a mentor?
Ambassadors' Day buddies specifically support your Just Like Us volunteering. Mentors on this programme are for your own personal and professional development. So yes, you could still use a mentor.
Can you cover my travel to the central London launch day?
Yes, we'll pay reasonable expenses!
Do I need to be UK-based for the whole year?
No - as long as you commit to your mentor meetings in person or online. Some of our mentees have been on years abroad and still have benefited from online meetings with their mentors.
How am I matched with my mentor?
We try to broadly match by your career or professional development interests.
FAQ for prospective mentors
What if I can't make it to the launch?
Please get in touch with Taz (taz.rasul@justlikeus.org) to discuss. We need to make sure provision is in place to ensure you can still build a successful mentoring relationship.
Do I need to be invited to this?
Usually you will be invited to this specifically by Travers Smith or Just Like Us. If that's not how you found us, then please get in touch with Taz (taz.rasul@justlikeus.org) to discuss - you may still be able to join!
Are you looking for LGBT+ mentors from specific sectors?
No - we are looking for people from a range of sectors because our ambassadors have a range of career interests.

Do I need to be LGBT+ myself?
Yes - it's really important that our ambassadors have LGBT+ role models for this programme.
Are ambassadors the same as mentees?
Yes. The people you will be mentoring are from a bigger pool of LGBT+ young adults who volunteer as 'ambassadors' for our charity. They go into schools and colleges, running workshops and talks with LGBT+ and non-LGBT+ kids that promote equality.
